Between bags, gear and bookings, a ski week can turn into a small house move. We have put everything you need for Livigno into a single list: what to book first, what to bring from home and what is better to rent.

Before you leave

  • Accommodation: ideally near a lift or a bus stop. The town is more than 10 km long.
  • Ski pass: see which period you fall in with our ski pass guide. Early and late in the season it may be included with Skipass Free.
  • Third-party liability insurance: mandatory on Italian slopes.
  • Rental: book it online to get 20% off the list price and your size available.
  • Winter tyres or chains: required from 15 October to 30 April to come up over the Foscagno.
  • Valid ID for everyone: you need it if you come through Switzerland and for reduced ski pass fares.

Clothes to bring from home

Livigno is cold and often sunny: on January mornings it is well below zero, and at midday the sun is strong. Dress in layers.

  • Thermal underwear and technical leggings
  • Breathable tops and fleece
  • Waterproof ski jacket and trousers
  • Gloves and a spare pair
  • Neck warmer or balaclava
  • Hat or ear band
  • Ski socks, wool or technical
  • Warm snow boots with a non-slip sole
  • Comfortable clothes for the evening

What to rent in Livigno

Skis, boots and poles are expensive and awkward to carry in a car, let alone on a train or plane. Renting makes particular sense if you travel as a family or ski only a few times a year, and if your children go up a size every winter.

With Skialo you find everything at three points, in Doss, San Rocco and Carosello, and you can cancel free of charge until the day before.

Handy accessories

  • Goggles and sunglasses: at altitude the snow reflects a lot of UV.
  • High-protection sun cream for your face, neck and ears.
  • Power bank: the cold drains phones and action cams fast.
  • Thermal bottle or flask: you dehydrate in the cold too.
  • Lip balm with sun protection and a small backpack for breaks.

One last thing: getting there

You can reach Livigno by car over the Foscagno Pass, open all year, or from Switzerland through the Munt la Schera tunnel. By train you go to Tirano and continue on the Perego bus. Dates, times and tips are in our article on when the lifts open.

If we could leave you with one piece of advice, it would be not to leave your rental until the last day: in peak weeks the most popular sizes go first. Once you have booked online, you can cancel free of charge until the day before.
